The charm of Connecticut is all too apparent. It’s coastal string of towns and cities, known as the Gold Coast of Connecticut houses to locals, has been recently dubbed “The New Hamptons.” A quick commute from New York City’s hustle and bustle, the state is charming, refreshing and quaint. Offering itself as an accessible retreat for those who are looking for a calm and serene summer. With over 3,500 sq ft a Connecticut couple faced a severe design dilemma, they had recently purchased a four-bedroom Connecticut summer house.
With all this beautiful land they imagined cool summers, catching waves, in several beaches minutes away. However, the summer home didn’t match its lush beachy surroundings or reflect the personalities of its new owners. Before long, they reached out and tasked Décor Aid‘s interior designers, with updating their home renovation and assisting them with adding color, bold statement decor and a mid-century modern style to their vacation home in need of a design touch. The Connecticut couple was excited to collaborate and share their modern home ideas with our interior designer, Sue.
“As soon as you walk into their summer house you’re immediately drawn to the ceilings, which emphasized the low-quality lighting they had in place, due to limited space between the ceiling and the roof. I knew right away that this Connecticut house had a lot of potential,” Sue, Décor Aid Interior Designer points out.
Right from the first walk-through of the vacation home, Sue immediately noticed a few of the challenges our clients faced with their Connecticut house beside the lighting, recognizing the home’s living room and master bedroom fireplaces, were severely outdated. It was clear that our interior designer had a lot of work to do, but was eager to take on the interior design challenge this summer house presented. All the while our clients were impressed that Sue was able to locate two of their most significant concerns and excited to see how Sue would transform their new vacation abode into their dream summer home.
Throughout the entire Connecticut house, we repainted all the walls in soft neutral grays, beiges, and off-whites. Though the walls were painted in such muted colors, Sue made sure to add pops of color, like the Flower-Vine wallpaper which was used to create a statement wall in the client’s den. The statement wall also helps the blue hues in West Elm’s Monroe sofa-chaise, with full cushions and handy bolster pillows, perfectly matched the client’s mid-century modern aesthetic which was also sourced for the den.
Moving on from the den to the home’s living room decor, Sue was able to implement the same color effects, with a spectacular area rug, that added a needed pop of color while highlighting the interior design within reach sofa, the center and focal point of the living room.
“The main level of the summer house has beautiful high ceilings which we emphasized through layering the lighting throughout that floor. On the lower levels of their Connecticut house, we had to add faux wood beams to house the new recessed lighting the clients envisioned for their summer home’s interior,” Sue reflects on the modern home ideas that were implemented in our client’s home.
The dining room of the summer house features the clients favorite light fixture, Franceand Son Ronell chandelier, inspired by modern space-age designs, adds a retro fun and character to a room that was previously lacking character. Velvet, dove gray West Elm dining chairs complement the chandelier as well as the Connecticut house’s overall mid-century modern aesthetic.
Like the France and Son light, the Roche Bobois Saga2 dining table was sourced to add a bold statement to the formal eating space of the Connecticut house, while reflecting the clients fun and innovative personalities. With Decor Aid’s interior design services and professional network, our clients were connected to vetted contractors who were able to take our client’s modern home ideas and build amazing fireplaces in place of their old ones. Sue’s expertise transformed our client’s dining room into a bright and airy interior that can be great for formal affairs or intimate dinners with family and friends.
Last but not least was the client’s master bedroom, which was a dreary room in the Connecticut house with the smallest windows in the home, was in desperate need of good lighting. Sue being the creative individual that she is, sourced ceiling lights as mounted bedside table lamps resting on the O2 nightstand from Moe’s Home Collection, which brought the mid-century modern design to the master bedroom, made from Sheesham wood. Due to the intricate craftsmanship, it is both modern and vintage. The subtle but colorful Jasper rug from pops with deep purples, bright pinks and soft pastel greens, all while framing the Moe’s Home collection O2 king bed, undoubtedly the center of their spacious private quarters.
After the finishing touches, shiny dining table decor accessories and more decor placed throughout the Connecticut house, which brought in fun colors like the Joybird Lenette Swivel Chairs were put in place by Sue, the project resulted in a mid-century modern design for our client’s summer house. Their collaborated modern home ideas were emphasized through the layered lighting on both levels of this Connecticut summer home. Our clients appreciated that our interior designer brought in vivid colors and size-appropriate furniture that maintains the expansive feeling of their open floor-plan. They now have a vacation home that pairs well with their style, while standing as a reflection of their fun personalities.
